Why Does My Usb Drive Keep Disconnecting From Mac Os
- Flash Drive Keeps Disconnecting
- Why Does My Usb Drive Keep Disconnecting From Mac Os Windows 7
- External Usb Drive Keeps Disconnecting
Hi,
This is a long post - but one that I hope someone can offer advice on.
The Hardware
Mac Pro running OSX 10.8 (but this has happened on all versions of the OS i.e. 10.6/.7 etc)
3 x Internal SATA Hard Drives - All working perfectly.
External Drives:
2 x Western Digital My Book 1TB USB Hard Drives
1 x Seagate 750GB Hard Drive with USB2 connectivity
2 x IcyBox Dual Bay USB2 hard Drive enclosures using JMicron Chipsets - these enclosures have 2 x 1TB Western Digital Green in each (totaling 4 TB across the 2 enclosures).
D-Link 7 Port USB2 Hub
The Problem
- USB Hard Drives connected to the Mac are ejected from the system without notice and at random times AND/OR
- The external hard drive remains mounted, but when trying to write to the drive/partitions, Finder throws an error message up saying the operation cannot be completed - error code -50.
- Time Machine: TM will back up successfully several times, before eventually throwing an error up that it cannot create the folders required on the drive.
- The only way to be able to use the drives again is either remount the drive, or in some case, it is required to completely power the drive down and then reconnect.
Re-creating the problem
I have honestly not found a sure-fire way of replicating the problem. It seems completely random. It happens when I am actually sat at the computer, but it also happens when I am away from the computer.
In the past - my Time Machine hard drive has been one of the Western Digital MyBook drives. I also used the second MyBook for SuperDuper backups (extra redundancy). The 4TB drives in the IcyBox enclosures have been used to backup my ripped movie collection.
Recently however - I decided to have 2 of the 1TB drives in the IcyBox enclosures to be TM and SuperDuper backups. I have however reverted TM back to one of the Western Digital drives, purely for testing purposes. SuperDuper is backing up to one of the 1TB drives in the IcyBox.
I am trying various things to see if I can find the issue, but it is such a random event that it is taking ages to even come close to find a problem. Sometimes the drives will stay active for a few days, sometimes only a few hours, even minutes.
Theories
I have several theories as to why my USB drives continually disconnect.
1. The D-Link USB Hub.
Could connecting the drives through the hub be causing the problem? I don't really see how, unless it is a documented case that D-Link USB hubs do not play nice with OSX? To try and rule this out I have connected the current Time Machine back up drive (Western Digital MyBook) directly to the USB port on the back of the computer. The SuperDuper (IcyBox enclosure) drive is currently connected through the D-Link hub. I have removed all the other drives from the enclosures - so at present I have only 2 external drives connected (1 x 1TB Western Digital MyBook, 1 x 1TB Western Digital Green inside one of the IcyBox dual-bay enclosures - connected through D-Link Hub).
2. JMicron Chipset
I have done a bit of research on the internet and there are a few indications that perhaps JMicron SATA-to-USB controller chipsets found in a lot of external hard drive enclosures (including the dual bay IcyBox external enclosures that I have) do not play nice with OSX. If the JMicron chipsets in the 2 IcyBox enclosures is a problem - would that cause issues with other USB devices on the USB bus off the Mac? (i.e. can the JMicron chipset in the enclosures cause devices such as the WD MyBook drives which I assume use a non-JMicron chipset, to experience similar failures?)
3. Green Hard Drives
As I have said, I have 4 Western Digital Green 1TB hard drives inside the IcyBox Dual Bay Enclosures. Could the fact that these drives are 'Green' be causing a problem? They do go to sleep after x number of minutes, but they do wake up when required. But could on the occasion when I have problems, could this be caused by the 'Green' feature interrupting OSX in waking the drives? Coupled with JMicron chipset, could this be compounding the issue?
Possible Solutions
I am prepared to spend money on replacement drives and/or enclosures etc - but I would hate to spend x amount of money and have the same problem. So I am hoping to get some advice on what drives/enclosures are more than likely to work flawlessly with OSX.
Thanks for reading!
Flash Drive Keeps Disconnecting
FYI - re: the SuperDuper drive that is in one of the IcyBox enclosures.
I just opened this drive up in Finder. I heard the drive wake up, but when I came to copy a file over (tried various file sizes) - I got the error -50 message.
Here is the info from Console.

Dec 27, 2018 I’m having the same issueI have a 3TB My Book for Mac that does not do this, and a 6TB My Book (not specifically for Mac) and a 10TB My Book (not for Mac) that both “look empty” anytime the Mac wakes up from sleep. They need to be physically disconnected.
I store ALL my photos (400 events) on an external 1T hard drive. The hard drive keeps disconnecting so it get a msg telling me I disconnected improperly basically which is a serious no no. I then have to re-start. I have tried connecting directly to the wall outlet, to a super duper surge protector and also have connected the usb (was on a usb port) directly to the computer. But it continues to happen a total nusance. What do I do?
I would first contact Seagate's tech support for a possible solution. If that doesn't prove successful then I would try a different product or consider building your own.
Basic Backup
Get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
Carbon Copy Cloner
Data Backup
Deja Vu
Silver Keeper
Retrospect
Super Flexible File Synchronizer
SuperDuper!
Synchronize Pro! X
Synk Pro
Synk Standard
Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore. Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
Although you can buy a complete external drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined. It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.) You can purchase hard drives separately. This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice. Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu. You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available. You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports. I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.) You can find enclosures at places such as;
Cool Drives
OWC
WiebeTech
Firewire Direct
California Drives

All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover. Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.I have a MacBook Pro running snow leopard. Has got two user accounts on it. Comes up with 29 Gb remaining on the internal hard drive. IPhoto was not responding in my wife's account. I think the hard drive space is the issue here. I have had a number of attempts to get the '29 Gb remaining' changing to a higher figure but those attempts do not increase that figure.
I did keep trying to securely remove trash, by removing some of the events in my iPhoto first, and removing the iTunes libraries of both accounts. When securely emptying the trash, it came up with 27,000 items to delete, and took all night. On re-starting the laptop, the '29 Gb remaining' was unchanged. Any tips to get this figure up, and be able hopefully to access my wife's iPhoto account ? Then try from there.
I got an iMac running iTunes with the libraries there. So I need no music in the laptop.I started up the laptop today. Finder showed there was 65 Gb available . Maybe takes a day or two to bed in, any changes from securily emptying the trash. Fired up iPhoto, had a beach ball for 10 seconds, holding my breath 'here we go again'... then it stopped spinning . The application was then alright. Works okay this evening.
Looks like the issue is solvedExternal hard drive on Time Machine, running via USB keeps disconnecting. Get the pop us that the drive wasn't disconnected properly. This Mac is brand new as is the hard drive. It is a Seagate 1T Free Agent.
After a minute or two it reconnects. I've run Seagate diagnostics and it says the drive is fine.
Any suggestions?See #A1 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum), for a handy widget that will display the backup messages from your logs.
See what that shows; there may be a problem with the backup, which results in TM ejecting the drive. If so, the disconnect may be a symptom, not a cause. If so, see #C2 there. If not, or if you're not sure, copy and post them here.
Also, to rule out other USB problems, disconnect everything but keyboard and mouse; connect the drive directly to your Mac (no hub).
Make sure all connections are snug and secure.
Try other ports, cables, and combinations of the two (a plug that works fine in one port may not make good contact in another one, and throw intermittent errors).Ive been working on a rather large project on Final Cut Pro for some time now and my SeaGate 1tb FreeAgent external hard drive im using keeps disconnecting on me, this makes it impossible to export large files because it will disconnect before they have enough time to finish the export. Some times the hard drive will stay connected for almost an hour, but usually it will disconnect at around 30 minutes.
Ive tried setting the Energy Saver setting so neither my computer or my display will go to sleep, ever. Ive checked the external harddrive itself with disk utility several times and its always fine. Ive tried different cables, unpluging other unused usb and firewire cables, Ive upgraded my ram, just about everything i can find it the forums, and still no luck. I have other hard drives that i use that work fine. What solutions are out there? Please help.

Recently it was misbehaving, and I was able to get about 10GB below capacity. Which really helped. Now however she comes to me and says email is not working and weird stuff is happening. So I certainly a novice at best look it over and the hard drive is completely full, zero space. She I am sure has not add much data, if any over the past few weeks that would have taken up 10GB. I noted thaat she did a recent software update, which may have pushed it over the edge.
Anyway, I launched a Carbon copy clone of the HD in order to hopefully prevent total catastrophe. This is running now.
We could not seem to even delete photos, etc. itunes stuff to help a bit. Kept getting error that it could not save itunes library or iphoto library.
Tomorrow I'll bring the computer to Apple Store for help. Is there anything I can do in the mean time??
Regards,
Jim SvarzOK, it's me, talking about what I would do..
I would delete both 'folders' FULL STOP.
There's an article in Apple's KB suggesting to trash anything in the /volumes/ apart from ANY mounted discs or images.
So, o fcourse, it's your call, but my advise would be to trash them.
Considering the number 1 after the name, the files are leftovers from 'Free Agent Drive' (some backup software - I guess), therefore safe to trash - there's your HD space!
As to CCC, if you are cloning (as opposed to backing up just a few folders) your clone would have those files on it as well, which is bad and good at the same time..
If you have a recent-ish clone, delete the files from the HD and if everything runs just fine, delete them from the clone as well. If anything refuses to run or crashes (VERY unlikely in relation to those two folders) you can always restore them from the clone.
Please keep us posted, it's worth learning stuff, innit?
PS. Does PS make any sense in electronic writing? I could just edit the text.. hmmm..
PPS. Back on the topic. Is 'Free Agent Drive' the name of your backup volume? If so, I am 99.9% certain it's a CCC leftover - safe to delete.
Apple KB article (which I can't find at the moment) says that it does happen under Leopard that stuff can get left over in volumes and it's not a fault of any third party software. You will forgive me if I don't spend my night trawling for that article, but you could have a look for it here: http://support.apple.com/kb/index?page=search

One external drive is in a basic external case and 2 are exposed on my desk using an Adapter Converter Cable. I've never had this kind of problem with these hookups in the past. And it's completely random. They work for a day or 2 at most and then suddenly when I wake the machine 1-2 or all 3 have dropped out and I have to unplug and restart the drive. The internal drive has never done this - it has 2 partitions. It rarely happens WHEN I'm actually using the machine and it's never happened when the computer was reading or writing to the drive and caused any corruption that I know of.
It started when I first hooked them up right after I got the iMac and has been the same every day since. I can't remember if it happened with SnowLeopard or if it started when I installed Lion a day or two after I got the machine. I have not tried booting into Leopard to test that.
2 of the drives came from my old G5 and one is new - all Seagate

Thank you for any help with this,
JayJay,
No where did you mention how the EHD's are connected. Is it USB, Firewire, FW800 and if so are they connected directly to the back of the computer or via a hub. If they're USB are they bus powered or powered with external power? You need to be specific so we can begin helping.
If they're USB drives with external power and are connected directly to the back of the computer then try doing a SMC reset 2-3X.
SMC RESET
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
Release the power button.
Attach the computers power cable.

Over the last two days, I've noticed that my external drive (a Freecom 500GB) has just randomly disconnected at various points. I haven't removed the cables, or even jolted them. An error message appears saying that the drive has been disconnected without being ejected, and that this may cause me to lose data. But I'm not disconnecting it manually!
Is this likely to be a fault with the drive or the Mac?If the drive is bus powered and you have no AC adapter for it or it has no provision for connecting one, you will need to buy an AC-powered USB hub to connect to the Powerbook, and plug the drive into the hub. The drive isn't getting enough power from the USB bus at some times, and when the power is inadequate, the drive drops off the OS's radar even though it remains connected.

My probelem involves:
Rescue and Recovery 4,21
Thinkpad x61 Tablet
Vista Business 32 bit, Service pack 2
USB hard drive
Here are the details - I restored my system from a backup (on a usb hard drive) using R & R. I chose the option to save the files that were created or changed since the backup to the usb hard drive. The restoration was successful (mostly - so far). However, I have been unable to restore individual files from the usb hard drive that I saved as part of the restoration process. I can see the files on the usb hard drive, but they do not appear when I attempt to restore them using R & R. How can I restore these individual files? Thanks in advance.Mmm ok thanks I'll look I to that then. To be honest, HFSExplorer has been pretty good but sometimes doesn't work. So I'll check out what you suggested.
ThxHi,
I just attached a nearly new Seagate 2 TB Expansion USB external drive to my iMac running Snow Leopard, as a Time Machine drive.
The drive sits idle until Time Machine does a backup. However, the drive keeps disconnecting momentarily - I get the 'your drive was not ejected properly' error message, the drive icon disappears for a few seconds, and then the drive reconnects by itself. Happens several times an hour.
Is this a known glitch? Do I need to replace the drive (it's under warranty, but still a bit of a nuisance)? My logs..

Mar 18 20:29:24 ****-******-mac-mini kernel[0]: jnl: disk1s2: journal replay done.Hello! I'm sure this has been posted before, but excuse my naivety with this sort of thing..
I have a mac mini 10.5.6 (1.83 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) and I run the Time Machine function to an external usb hard drive. The hard drive worked fine (plugged into the usb port on an older keyboard), but I went out and bought a new aluminum apple keyboard (because they look so cool ^_^ ) - I plugged the external usb drive into the keyboard and it wasn't recognized, so I tried plugging the external drive directly into the mac mini, but it is still not recognized. It is not showing up in Disk Utility or in System Profiler
Help? I'd hate to have to give up this fancy keyboard..
Thank you!
Dr. EI believe I had my external drive plugged into the (old) keyboard because with the old mac that I had didn't have a free usb port for it - so when I got the mini I just plugged things back in where they were. But I have always had the Time Machine back up to this drive (connected to the keyboard) though it has been slow (another reason I thought the new keyboard was a good idea).
I tried restarting the computer without the alu keyboard plugged in, but same problem of no drive showing up.
Here is what System Profiler has to say about my drive:

I don't know the brand or model as it has 'always' been in the case that in which it currently resides and I didn't physically buy the thing : I do know that no software was installed with the drive as I assumed that when I put all the old info from the original mac to the mini that it was the sort of thing that would carry over.
Sorry I'm not terribly helpful - Thank you!
Dr. EI am running Windows 7 Ulitmate 64-bit on my 2011 15' Macbook Pro. I have a USB Hard Drive (WD My Passport SE - USB 3.0/2.0 - 1 TB).
The hard drive is formatted for HFS+ and I am running Mac Drive 8 to detect it in Windows.
For some reason when I reboot (in Windows), the hard drive won't be there until I unplug it and plug it back in.
This is really annoying! Can anybody help me? I'm pretty good with things like this but I can't think of any reason this shouldn't be working right.
HELP =T

Message was edited by: PTHEOFYLI am having the exact same problem. WD 1TB Passport. USB 3.0 drive. Running on Windows 7 Pro 64 via Bootcamp.
My 1TB Passport is formatted with FAT32 and works with Windows and Mac OS.
I was getting the same problem when I was running Windows XP Pro on the same MacBook Pro. I was hoping the upgrade to Windows 7 would remidy the issue but it did not.
The drive light is on in a steady state when I boot and I have the same symptoms as reported by everyone else above.
In my research, I am leaning towards thinking that it is a power issue related to the cable used to connect the USB 3.0 Drive or something to do with the USB driver for Bootcamp, but researching the WD site suggests it's a power issue, not a faulty or failing drive.
I have a 500GB WD Passport USB 2.0 also attached to my computer, also running FAT32 and it starts up no problem. It's just the USB 3.0 drive that is having this issue.
Also worth noting; the drive is detected properly when I boot in Mac OS X. It's only the Windows side I have to unplug and plug back in to access the drive.I have a small 2.5' external USB hard drive that my intel iMac will not mount or see. My 12' G4 Powerbook sees it fine and it is formatted in Mac OS Extended. My iMac is bootcamped and XP on my iMac sees the drive but not OS X Tiger on the iMac, (wierd) I have Tiger on both my Macs too.
Why does the intel based OS X refuse to see this external 2.5 HD. It sees a 3.5' USB one I have but not the small one. I know it is software.Hey coby,
Well thanks for the star. Not sure I deserve it.
i then tried connecting the drive to each USB port again, and voila! i have found one it works in. I guess my computer's ports must be a little worn.
Hmm well try looking inside and see if there's some smutz in there, if the contacts are dirty or bent or worn.
i was starting to think i would have to go out and get a USB hub to give it some more power.
Is it powered off the USB? If so that actually might be a good idea since that puts a lot of strain on the connectors. Even if it's self powered it might be a good idea since it would take the strain off an obviously flakey USB.
